We are very pleased to present the Ninth edition of Nolte’s the Human Brain: An Introduction to
its Functional Anatomy. This new edition upholds the academic rigor established in the previous
editions written by Dr. Jack Nolte. The text presents the basic science of the nervous system, which
continues to help our clinical understanding of normal and abnormal behaviors while emphasizing
methods and treatments that are being used in practice today. We have continued to stay true
to the ideas in the inception of the book, keeping simply to the facts and not trying to obfuscate.
We have updated terminology as it continues to evolve, including removing obsolete terms. This
new edition has updated figures, tables, and illustrations to help the reader better understand and
categorize important facts. True to the text’s reputation, this edition continues to use the latest in
medical imaging, multiple-choice items at the end of each chapter on Student Consult, and crossreferencing between chapters and sections to help readers gain a deeper understanding of how the varied parts of the nervous system work together. Suggested readings have been emphasized, and references have been listed for more detailed information on each area of the nervous system.
In addition to the many traditions upheld in this new edition, the ninth edition introduces hasadded more clinical boxes to connect science undrstanding to medically related scenerios. The
clinical boxes are distributed throughout the chapters and highlight high-yield, clinically relevant
nervous system disorders and pathologies. The clinical boxes are based on the most updated literature and statistics and are complemented by illustrative imaging as appropriate. Our hope is that students, enthusiasts, and faculty find these materials useful in their own learning and teaching.
